Ride Hard Breathe Easy was formed in 2017 as a cycling campaign to honor my mom, Kathleen Matthews. Mom died of lung cancer in 2011 and when she was very sick I promised her that I would do something in her memory as well as for all lung cancer patients.

The reason is quite simple. Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer of both women and men in every state of our country.  Early detection is critical to fighting this disease as people diagnosed in Stage 1 are more than three times as likely to live five years than those diagnosed in Stage 4. Our campaign works with The Bonnie J Addario Lung Cancer Foundation and Lung Cancer Alliance, two leading organizations committed to fighting lung cancer everyday. The money we raise goes to programs they lead to help with early detection.

In two years, we have raised over $143,000 to fight this terrible disease.
In November of 2018, Lung Cancer Awareness Month, we had 700+ people from over 20 countries join us to “Ride Around the World” which is 24,901 miles. We had help from 8 spinning locations from Elkins Spark FitnessBrick Bodies and the YMCA of Bucks County. Together, we rode over 61,000 miles. Over the past two years, we have completed a 3,500+ mile ride across the country and an 1,850+ mile ride in the East Coast. Our ambition is to have 100,000 people riding a bike for lung cancer patients every November in 2026.

Please contact me at john@rhbe.org if you want to ride, drive, or help, or if you have any questions. We have dozens of people involved again this year as we follow Mom's famous words that "Many Hands Make Light Work".
